SMITH LAKE — Funeral services are pending for LeAndro B. Alonzo, 30.

Alonzo died July 2, 2011, near Little Water. He was born Nov. 17, 1980.

Elsie Begay

CROWNPOINT — Services for Elise Begay, 78, will be Thursday, July 7, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Crownpoint. Burial will be in Crownpoint Community Cemetery.

Begay died July 2, 2011, in Crownpoint. She was born Sept. 15, 1932, in Newcomb, into the Water’s Edge People Clan for the Ute People Clan.

Begay attended Albuquerque Indian School. She worked as a food service employee at Crownpoint Elementary and Borrego Pass School. She then worked as a Culinary Instructor at the Navajo Skill Center, now known as Navajo Technical College. She was well known for making wedding cakes and winning various trophies in competitions for her cakes. Begay enjoyed time spent with family, friends and grandchildren. Her hobbies included watching wrestling, rug weaving, sewing and enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s basketball and football games.

Survivors include her daughters, Alfreda Yazzie, Alberta Silago, Louann Begay; sons, Alfred H. Begay Jr., Aldred Begay, Raefred Begay; sisters, Mary Ann Manuelito, Jane Begay, Ena Chavez; brother, Leo Bingman; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.

Begay was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred H. Begay Sr.; son, Alvin Begay; daughter, Eita May Begay; parents, Louis and Lucy Bingman; brothers, Keith Bingman, Henry Bingman; one grandson.

Pallbearers will be Stacey Louis Silago, Kris Begay, Petty Officer Second Class, Ryan Yazzie, Brian Tenequer, Rynie Yazzie, Rylan Yazzie.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Parish Hall, Crownpoint, following services.

Leslie Cardin

BLUEWATER — Services for Leslie Gay Cardin, 53, will be 2:30 p.m., today, July 6, at Compassion Mortuary.

Cardin died June 29, 2011, in Bluewater. She was born July 16, 1957, in Naturita, Colo.

Survivors include her children, James Moore of Grand Junction, Colo., Jonathan Moore of Grand Junction, Colo., Jolene Cole of Milan, Jessica Cardin-Cole of Grand Junction, Colo.; mother, Jackie Rowe of Bluewater; brother, Dale Rowe of Grants; sisters, Kathleen Brown of Utah, Connie Marsing of Bluewater, Janet Bush of Bluewater; eight grandchildren.

Cardin was preceded in death by her brother, Jr. Rowe.

Stanley Draper

CHURCHROCK — Funeral services for Stanley D. Draper, 67, were 10 a.m., today, July 6, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Chinle. Brother Joshua Van Cleeft officiated. Burial was in Draper family plot, Del Muerto. Visitation was 9 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Chinle.

Draper died July 1, 2011, in Churchrock. He was born June 4, 1944, into the Water’s Edge People Clan for the Salt People Clan.

Draper was an avid and dedicated Raider fan, never displayed failing support for youth activities awards/recognition ceremonies, games, sports, events, graduations and never forgot his siblings birthdays by sending birthday cards. He worked for the Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, Calif., for the BIA, Chinle as a sports activity counselor and sports activity counselor for the Navajo Tribe ONEO. Draper was a graduate of Holbrook High School in 1962.

Survivors include his wife, Winora Draper; son, T.J. Draper; daughter, Michelle Draper; parents, Teddy Draper Sr., Ida Bia Guy; brothers, Elmer Guy, Alphonso Guy, Charles K. Guy Jr., Terry Guy, Michael Draper Sr., Teddy Draper Jr., Otto Draper Sr., Wendel Draper, Teddy Draper III; sisters, Priscilla Tapaha, Maxine Dineyazhe, LaVerde Sorrell, Velina Guy, Thomacity Guy, Gloria Begody, Geneva Stephens, Theresa Draper, Theordora Draper, Wendy Wilson, Lorraine Wilson; grandparents, Etsitty and Margaret Draper.

Draper was preceded in death by his sister, Wilhemenia Guy; brothers, Delbert Draper, Preston Draper.

Pallbearers were George Yazzie, Virgil Mariano, Mike Dedman, Percy Yazzie, Bennie Tapaha, Murphy Jones.

Bill Haynes

ALBUQUERQUE — Funeral service for Bill Haynes, 81, will be 12 p.m., Friday, July 8, at French-Westside Chapel. Committal service will be 3 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
Haynes died Monday, July 4, 2011. He was born in Wetumka, Okla.

Haynes graduated from High School, and enlisted in the Air Force. He and his wife moved to New Mexico where he worked as an electrician for El Paso Natural Gas Co. for more than 30 years. Throughout his life, he found great enjoyment spending time with his family and friends. He particularly enjoyed fishing. Haynes had been a member of the Masons and the Elks Club in Gallup.

Survivors include his wife, Lavern; children, Peggy Jo Griego, Chris Haynes, David Haynes; brother, Kenneth Haynes; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Calvin Henderson

GALLUP — Graveside services for Calvin George Henderson, 39, will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 7, at the family plot, Springstead. Bobby Arviso will officiate.

Henderson died July, 2011, in Albuquerque. He was born July 15, 1972, in Gallup, into the Zuni People Clan for the Mexican People Clan.

Henderson attended Jefferson Elementary and graduated from Gallup High School in 1990. He did labor work at various construction sites in Albuquerque.

Survivors include his parents, Sarah Livingston, Steven Henderson Jr.; brothers, Steve Henderson III, Ernie Henderson, Petro Toledo; sisters, Cindy Henderson, Ernesta Toledo.

Henderson was preceded in death by his grandparents, Glen and Dorothy Livingston, Pete and Tullie Livingston.

Pallbearers will be Brian Chee, Terry Delgarito, Darin Jim, Lance Patterson, Ernie Henderson, Steve Henderson.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Churchrock Chapter House, following services.

Gary Largo

CROWNPOINT — Funeral services are pending for Gary Thomas Largo, 44.

Largo died July 4, 2011, in Prewitt. He was born Sept. 11, 1966, in Crownpoint.

A family gathering will be 5 p.m., tonight, July 6, at Crownpoint Chapter House. All are encouraged to attend.

Walter Lohmann

COAL BASIN — Walter A. Lohmann, 92, died July 4, 2011, in Coal Basin. He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Olathe, Kan.

Lohmann was an Army veteran, a captain in World War II, and a first sergeant in Germany and Korea, with 30 years of services. He lived in Coal Basin for 25 years before his death. Before moving to Gallup, he and his wife lived in Buedingen, Germany, serving American troops as civilians for 20 years after his retirement from the Army at Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1967. Lohmann was active in Retired Senior Volunteer Program, income tax assistance, Coal Basin Water Users Association, and McKinley Seniors, and veterans’ groups.

Survivors include his sons, Karl Lohmann of Coal Basin, Dr. George Patton Lohmann of Woods Hole, Mass., Dr. Kyger C. Lohmann of Ann Arbor, Mich.; three grandchildren.

Lohmann was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; parents, Nellie Price, Benjamin George Lohmann; sister, Eileen Sowers; brother, George Lohmann of Topeka, Kan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Gallup.

Caroline Nez

YATAHEY — Funeral services for Caroline Jean Nez, 46, will be 10 a.m., July 7, at The Door, Gallup Christian Center, Gallup. The Rev. Artie Aragon will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Gallup.

Nez died July 4, 2011, in Gallup. She was born June 13, 1965, in Gallup, into the Bitter Water People Clan for the Sagebrush Hill People Clan.
Nez attended Gallup High School. She was employed with the 11th Judicial DA’s Office for 16 years and DWI Instructor for 13 years. She attended The Door-Gallup Christian Center for 26 years. Nez received a Lifetime Achievement Award for the State of New Mexico. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, auntie, sister and friend.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Nez; sons, Joel Nez, Joe-Elliott Nez; mother, Gladys R. Yazzie; step-father, Mark Yazzie Sr.; brothers, Lonnie Joe, Mark Yazzie Jr., Dewayne Yazzie; sisters, Agnes Cayatineto, Flora lee, Lenora Dawes, Theresa Galvan; two grandchildren.
Nez was preceded in death by her father, Tom C. Joe; grandparents, Mary Ration, Tom Ration.
Pallbearers will be Joel Nez, Joe-Elliot Nez, Averill Cayatineto, Albert Nez, Jonathan Nez, Lonnie Joe.

Anita Schmaltz

GALLUP — Services are pending for Anita L. Schmaltz, 82.

Schmaltz died Monday, July 4, 2011, in Gallup. She was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Winslow.

Gary Yazzie

ALBUQUERQUE — Graveside services for Gary Jay Yazzie, 53, were 2 p.m., Thursday, June 30, at Parker Cemetery, Arkansas City, Kan. Robert L. Ferris officiated.

Yazzie died June 27, 2011, in Conroe, Texas. He was born Nov. 18, 1957, in Arkansas City, Kan., into the His Sheaves Under is Cover People Clan for the Leaf People Clan.

Yazzie attended elementary school in Arkansas City and Gallup. He graduated from Fort Wingate High School and attended Oscar Rose State College and Mid West College, Midwest City, Okla. Much of his entrepreneurial career was spent as an independent contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Yazzie; step-daughter, Brittany Ens; parents, Jimmie J. Yazzie (J.J.) of Gallup, Jeannette Brown of Conroe, Texas; step-mother, Peggy Yazzie of Gallup.
Yazzie was preceded in death by his grandparents.
